Forest River completely redesigns Windsong motor home for 2002
Press release: June 25, 2001
GOSHEN, Ind. Forest River is employing Workhorse Custom Chassis' 20,700 lb. GVWR platform to add greater value to its completely redesigned Windsong motor home for model year 2002.
Windsong is entering its fifth model year, but this year sees the first complete redesign of the coach. The motor home incorporates many extras as standard features, including the W Series chassis from Workhorse for five of the six floor plans. Forest River completed prototyping the unit at the end of May and immediately began production.
Standard Windsong features include insulated dual-pane windows; four-speaker surround sound with sub-woofer; Dometic's 9000 Series metal wrap awnings; a fiberglass gel coat exterior skin; custom oak valances; a one-piece fiberglass tub or shower; and a porcelain toilet from SeaLand Technology. Forest River also redesigned Windsong's front and back caps for 2002.
"We've gone over the Windsong from top to bottom, redesigning it," said Pete Liegl, president of Forest River. "These are the type of features that consumers usually have to pay extra for or add to their motor home after they buy it."
The Windsong is Forest River's high-line gasoline-powered motor home. Its other offering in the gasoline Class A market is the Georgetown.
One feature that makes Windsong special is its use of the W20 chassis from Workhorse. The W20 is one of two chassis offered in the heavy duty W Series, the first gasoline-powered motor home chassis designed for RVers.
The W20 employs GM's new Vortec 8100 8.1L engine boasting the largest displacement, highest horsepower and greatest torque of any gasoline-powered motor home engine. Reviewers have been awed by the acceleration, passing and hill-climbing muscle the engine brings to the motor home experience.
This engine is coupled with the Allison 1000 Series five-speed transmission, which features full electronic control over shift points and a close gear ratio for smoother shifting, increased fuel economy and better launch.
The Workhorse chassis comes with a three-year, 36,000-mile warranty, as well as Workhorse's network of one-stop service centers. It also offers a roadside assistance program for the life of the warranty. The Allison transmission has a three-year, unlimited miles warranty.
"We see the W20 chassis as one of the very strong points of the redesigned Windsong. The power and performance that chassis brings to the driving experience, coupled with the elegance and comfort of our coach makes this motor home truly different," said Liegl. "Our cockpit area, also redesigned for the 2002 model year, complements the W20 by providing a very modern, ergonomically designed, wrap around dashboard. This motor home will be a pleasure to drive."
The Windsong comes in six different floor plans four with double slideouts for extra room and comfort and two with single slideouts. Lengths range from 33 feet 6 inches to 35 feet 3 inches.
Other features include a vacuum laminated fully welded aluminum cage, a padded vinyl ceiling, a one-piece seamless rubber roof, a driver's door and a panoramic wrap-around windshield.
Forest River Inc. is the largest privately held recreational vehicle manufacturer in America. It is headquartered in Goshen and produces a full line of RVs.
Workhorse Custom Chassis is ISO 9001 certified and is a leader in the manufacture of motorhome chassis, step van chassis and integrated walk-in trucks. Its manufacturing facility is in Union City, Ind., and its corporate headquarters are in Highland Park, Ill.
