Will an RV club membership help you? Part 2--Smaller and specialized RV clubs

In our last discussion, we focused on two "big" clubs, Good Sam and Escapees. There are other groups besides these behemoths that might help you as you swim deeper into the RV lifestyle:

Brand name clubs are groups of RV owners who gather around their specific make. For example, we might belong to the Hitchhikers of America International Club, since our fifth wheel was built by Hitchhiker. Some manufacturers operate brand owner clubs, others are independents, usually set up by groups of owners. Membership in an owner's group usually comes with a newsletter, and the groups often have rallies where members can get together to eat and jaw.

Being a member of a brand group could be helpful if your rig is an "orphan," meaning the original manufacturer has gone out of business. Quirks and problems common to the brand are frequent conversation items, and members can help one another out by their base of experience.

From where we stand, however, perhaps the most "useful" kind of RV club is a specialty group. Are you or a loved one disabled, and struggling to RV? The Handicapped Travel Club (handicappedtravelclub.net) may be just the group to help you work out issues you face, without the need to "reinvent the wheel." Are you traveling without a mate? The Loners on Wheels group (lonersonwheels.com) is dedicated--not to matchmaking--but rather to supporting those who take to the RV road by themselves.

Other groups have different objectives. The Happy Camper Club is dedicated to discount camping--club members enjoy 50% discounts at RV parks around the nation. The annual membership fee of fifty bucks may really be a savings for you if you spend many nights in an RV park. The club also has a "social" aspect, providing a forum where members can discuss topics close to their hearts--like saving money. Check them out at camphalfprice.com.

There are RV clubs and specialty groups for just about every interest. How can you learn about them? They're no farther away than your search engine box. Type in RV Clubs and see what comes back!
