The ABC's of RVing

If you are totally new to the world of RVing, then this article is for you. We can't cover everything a neophyte might want to know, but we can give you some suggestions on how to get started and where to find more information. We're going to assume that you are starting from scratch.

To begin then, let's talk about "RV"-- It means Recreational Vehicle, with the emphasis on recreation. RVs are supposed to be fun. RVers enjoy the freedom to travel at their own pace and to stay in great places without sacrificing the comforts of home. Now that you're sold on the idea, where should you begin?

First, learn about the various classes of RVs. You'll find a great variety of models and options available, but don't get bogged down there. Begin by comparing the pros and cons of the different classes to the kind of travel and lifestyle that suits you. There's no right way to RV. Weekend excursions to the lake for some camping in comfort are a lot different than cross-country tours or snowbird stays. Read a book or two on RV basics.

Next go walk through some units. RV shows are great for this because there are usually lots of models of each RV class on display, but dealers can be good too. Just make it clear to the sales person that you are simply learning about RVs. Ask lots of questions, take lots of notes. Open doors and drawers. Sit and envision yourself and your family spending time in the unit. Check the bathroom and kitchen facilities. Note the prices for different classes and kinds of units, but don't even think about buying yet.

With your new appreciation for what's available, start thinking seriously about your RV lifestyle. It's also time to start considering budgets, both purchase and operating. And to help you sort things out, start talking to RVers. You probably have some RVing friends that you can check with. Visit a campground or RV park and talk to owners of different RV types. Why did they choose their RV and are they happy with their choice? What don't they like? Consider taking a trip in a rented RV. There's no substitute for first hand experience.

You'll find a wealth of help online. Join a forum and read as much as you can. Post your questions. You'll be surprised at how much help is available. This website is another resource. Only when you've narrowed down the choice to class and cost, are you ready to start comparison shopping. You'll find other articles, books and resources on how to make the final selection and negotiate the best deal. Take your time and find the right RV for you.
